From One Server to a Setup That Can Take a Hit

Context
The product started on a single VPS (app, database, cron jobs, everything). It worked until traffic grew and uptime started to matter. At that point, every change carried downtime risk. They needed a safer setup without overengineering.
Problem
- One server = one failure can take everything down
- Manual deployments over SSH
- Weak backup/restore confidence
- Scaling meant upgrading the same machine
Constraints
- Keep the product running during the move
- Minimal downtime during cutover
- Keep the architecture understandable for the team
Solution
- Designed a simple target setup: load balancer + multiple app instances
- Split responsibilities so the app can scale without touching data every time
- Migrated gradually and shifted traffic safely
- Put backups and restore checks in place (not just backups on paper)
Results
- Less downtime risk from single points of failure
- Scaling became easier and safer
- Maintenance stopped feeling like gambling
